Cups to grams
without guessing.

Convert cups to grams for flour, sugar, butter, and more. Multiply the number of cups by the ingredient's grams-per-cup density to get an accurate weight.

Butter227g454g
Water / milk237g474g

How the conversion actually works

A cup measures how much space an ingredient takes up. A gram measures how much of that ingredient is actually there. The two only line up once you know the ingredient's density, since flour, sugar, and liquids all pack into a cup differently.

That is why a single "1 cup equals this many grams" answer is misleading on its own. PantryGauge starts from each ingredient's own density instead of one universal number, so a cup of flour and a cup of honey are treated as the different quantities they actually are.

For a custom amount, use the main converter and switch the direction in your recipe notes. Flour is lighter by volume; dense ingredients such as honey and salt are heavier.

Common questions

Cups to grams FAQ.

What does 1 cup equal in grams?

It depends on the ingredient. A cup of all-purpose flour is about 120g, a cup of granulated sugar is about 200g, and a cup of water or milk is about 237g. Cups measure volume and grams measure weight, so the number changes with whatever fills the cup.

How many grams are in a cup?

There is no single answer that works for every ingredient. Light, aerated ingredients like flour weigh less per cup than dense ones like honey or salt. Check the ingredient table above for a specific, ingredient-aware figure.

How do I convert a recipe from grams to cups, or cups to grams?

Find the ingredient's density in grams per cup, then divide a gram amount by that density to get cups, or multiply a cup amount by that density to get grams. The converter above does this automatically for every ingredient listed here.

Is 250g equal to 1 cup?

Not for every ingredient. 250g is close to one and a quarter cups of granulated sugar, but closer to two cups of all-purpose flour, since flour is lighter by volume. The ingredient matters as much as the weight.

Is 200g the same as 1 cup?

For granulated sugar, 200g is almost exactly 1 cup. For water or milk, 200g is a little less than 1 cup, around 0.84 cups. The relationship changes by ingredient, which is why a single all-purpose answer is not reliable.

How much is half a cup in grams?

Half a cup is half of whatever the full-cup weight is for that ingredient. That is about 60g for flour, 100g for granulated sugar, and 114g for butter.
