The word cup hides several different volumes
A US customary cup holds about 236.6ml, commonly rounded to 237ml in recipes. The US legal cup used on nutrition labels is a separate, rounded standard of 240ml, used for labeling rather than everyday cooking.
A metric cup, used in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and increasingly the UK, holds exactly 250ml. An older UK imperial cup, still seen in some pre-metric British recipes, holds about 284ml, noticeably larger than either.

A small percentage adds up across a recipe
The gap between a US cup (237ml) and a metric cup (250ml) is about 5 percent for a single cup. That sounds minor, but a recipe with several cups of flour and a couple of cups of liquid compounds that gap across every ingredient.
Japan uses a smaller traditional cup of about 200ml for rice and some liquids, based on the historical go unit. A rice cooker's plastic measuring cup is smaller still, often close to 180ml, which is a different measure again from a standard kitchen cup.

How to tell which cup a recipe means
Check the recipe's country of origin first. A US site almost always means the US or US legal cup, an Australian or Canadian site usually means the metric cup, and an older British cookbook may mean the imperial cup.
If the recipe lists a millilitre or gram amount next to the word cup, trust that number over the word itself. Modern recipes increasingly include this detail for exactly this reason.

None of these cup sizes change what a gram means. A gram is the same unit everywhere, regardless of which country's cup a recipe was originally written with.
